Family-School Partnerships in Context PDF Download

Family-School Partnerships in Context PDF
By:Susan M. Sheridan,Elizabeth Moorman Kim
Published on 2015-08-24 by Springer

This volume focuses on context considerations in family-school partnership research. The book examines how cultural diversity, including differences in parenting (e.g., race, education, family history) and diverse school variables (e.g., location, population, organization,) can affect family-school partnerships. Its bio ecological perspective pinpoints critical areas that studies need to address for real-world utility, such as parental commitment and developmental considerations. Although the book’s focus is research, chapters present program designs and evaluations along with ideas for community involvement and policy. The authors also explore the changing landscape for home-school partnerships resulting from the impact of technology, which is rapidly becoming a central player in organizing research and bringing interventions to life. Topics covered include: Complexities in field-based partnership research. Family-centered, school-based interventions. A district leadership approach to school, family and community partnerships. Research issues to forward a policy agenda supporting family-school partnerships. Testing statistical moderation in research on home-school partnerships. Integrating current and evolving knowledge toward future directions for research. Contexts of Family-School Partnerships is a valuable resource for researchers, professionals and graduate students in child and school psychology, educational policy and politics, family studies, developmental psychology, sociology of education, sociology and anthropology.

Child Rearing in the Home and School PDF
By:R.P. Boger,R.J. Griffore
Published on 2013-06-29 by Springer Science & Business Media

This volume is intended to address contemporary aspects of child rearing in the home and the school, as well as major dimensions of inter face between the home and the school. The authors of these chapters have used varying styles and approaches, and the range of perspectives is very broad and inclusive. An essential notion integrating all chapters is that child rearing is a human ecological concern of dominant importance for the home, the school, and the community during the 1980's and that this will continue to be true in the future. This volume is intended to be useful as a reference book, as a text, for researchers and for policy-makers. It is hoped that the volume also will be of use to parents, teachers, school administrators, child-care workers and others who are interested in child nurturance. The editors wish to extend appreciation to many individuals who made this effort possible. Our colleagues, Hiram Fitzgerald and Marjorie Kostelnik, have been most helpful and encouraging. We thank them for their patience, support, and invaluable editorial assistance during the production of the camera-ready copy of the volume. We also thank Barbara Taylor for her assistance in typing the chapters, and Carrie DeMyers for typing the camera-ready copy. Carrie's good-nature and posi tive outlook helped to smooth over the many frustrations inherent in the assembly and production of anthologies such as this one.

Early Child Development from Measurement to Action PDF Download

Early Child Development from Measurement to Action PDF
By:Mary E. Young,Linda M. Richardson
Published on 2007 by World Bank Publications

Prosperity in the world today depends on societies' nurturing of young children. Quality care (stimulation, health, and nutrition) during ages 0 - 5 has a decisive and long-lasting impact on a person's development, ability to learn, and capacity to regulate emotions. Cognitive and noncognitive (social and emotional) skills, set early in life, determine later success. New research in neurobiology and the behavioral and social sciences is converging to enhance this understanding of early child development. Recently, researchers noted epigenetic effects in brain development - that is, the interaction of environment (early experiences) with genetics to shape brain structure and function - that with proper nurturing would enable people to have competence to create prosperous, sustainable, tolerant, nonviolent, and democratic communities. The World Bank recently hosted a symposium on the priority of early child development for economic growth and equity. The participants urged application of population - based tools and measures to assess the outcomes of children's early years and children's readiness for school. This approach, which shifts the focus from measures of disease, dysfunction, and mortality, is already yielding essential data for designing intervention programs, identifying children at risk, and leveraging policy and investment - to improve the possibilities for all children globally.

The Parents We Mean to Be PDF Download

The Parents We Mean to Be PDF
By:Richard Weissbourd
Published on 2009-05-01 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

Harvard psychologist RichardWeissbourd argues incisively that parents—not peers, not television—are the primary shapers of their children’s moral lives. And yet, it is parents’ lack of self-awareness and confused priorities that are dangerously undermining children’s development. Through the author’s own original field research, including hundreds of rich, revealing conversations with children, parents, teachers, and coaches, a surprising picture emerges. Parents’ intense focus on their children’s happiness is turning many children into self-involved, fragile conformists. The suddenly widespread desire of parents to be closer to their children—a heartening trend in many ways—often undercuts kids’morality. Our fixation with being great parents—and our need for our children to reflect that greatness—can actually make them feel ashamed for failing to measure up. Finally, parents’ interactions with coaches and teachers—and coaches’ and teachers’ interactions with children—are critical arenas for nurturing, or eroding, children’s moral lives. Weissbourd’s ultimately compassionate message—based on compelling new research—is that the intense, crisis-filled, and profoundly joyous process of raising a child can be a powerful force for our own moral development.

The Influence of Parental Involvement on Academic Self-Confidence and Engagement PDF Download

The Influence of Parental Involvement on Academic Self-Confidence and Engagement PDF
By:Elizabeth Ifeoma Anierobi,Obinna Anthony Ezennaka
Published on 2019-11-08 by GRIN Verlag

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Psychology - Learning Psychology, Intelligence Research, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka (Faculty of Education), language: English, abstract: What is the relationship between parental involvement and academic self-confidence of junior secondary school students in Awka? What is the relationship between parental involvement and academic engagement among junior secondary school students in Awka? Parental involvement in the academic activities of their children, no doubt, plays a vital role towards developing academic self-confidence and engagement of the students. As the primary socializing agent of the children, parents have the responsibility of nurturing them for all round development through their interaction. However, in this contemporary time where parents are very busy with making money and pursuing their different careers and vocations, they seem to pay less or no attention by getting involved in the academic activities of their wards, thereby, leaving them solely in the hands of teachers or all by themselves. This development seems to be a slap on the expectation that parents through nurturing their children build their self-confidence which could in turn affect how they engage in academic activities. It is against this scenario that the researcher determines to explore the predictive influence of perceived parental involvement on academic self-confidence and academic engagement among junior secondary school students in Awka. Parental involvement refers to the degree to which parents are committed to their role in providing guidance, showing interest, motivating their wards and having a good communication skill geared towards promoting their children’s active engagement in the school. It typically concerns the amount of effort that parents put into child-oriented education as well as other activities. Apparently, parental involvement refers to parent behaviours related to the child’s school or schooling that can be observed as manifestations of their commitment to their child’s educational affairs. This means that a parent who shows these behaviours in a larger extent, can be regarded as higher involved than a parent who shows these behaviours in a lesser degree. In this study, parental involvement is delimited to the degree to which students feel that their parents get involved and put efforts into their education to ensure their active engagement in academic activities revolving around teaching and learning processes in the classroom.

Schedules of Reinforcement PDF
By:B. F. Skinner,C. B. Ferster
Published on 2015-05-20 by B. F. Skinner Foundation

The contingent relationship between actions and their consequences lies at the heart of Skinner’s experimental analysis of behavior. Particular patterns of behavior emerge depending upon the contingencies established. Ferster and Skinner examined the effects of different schedules of reinforcement on behavior. An extraordinary work, Schedules of Reinforcement represents over 70,000 hours of research primarily with pigeons, though the principles have now been experimentally verified with many species including human beings. At first glance, the book appears to be an atlas of schedules. And so it is, the most exhaustive in existence. But it is also a reminder of the power of describing and explaining behavior through an analysis of measurable and manipulative behavior-environment relations without appealing to physiological mechanisms in the brain. As en exemplar and source for the further study of behavioral phenomena, the book illustrates the scientific philosophy that Skinner and Ferster adopted: that a science is best built from the ground up, from a firm foundation of facts that can eventually be summarized as scientific laws.

Foundational Aspects of Family-School Partnership Research PDF
By:Susan M. Sheridan,Elizabeth Moorman Kim
Published on 2015-04-22 by Springer

This volume focuses on how family-school partnerships are conceptualized, defined, and operationalized as well as the research that is needed to advance these foundational issues. Each chapter integrates prevailing approaches into a research-based framework for supporting learning from pre-K through high school. The book incorporates structural and relational methods into the larger context of educational processes to promote research about collaboration and to improve the academic and behavioral development of students. Diverse theories and models of family-school alliances demonstrate approaches and interventions that are goal-directed and strengths-based, respectful and responsive. In addition, the book analyzes cognitive, behavioral, and interpersonal aspects of partnership and discusses different methods of assessing parental involvement and student outcomes. Included in the coverage are innovative, agenda-setting discussions on: Definitions and conceptual frameworks of family-school partnerships. Need-satisfying partnerships. Diverse parent perspectives and participation. Measurement of family-school partnership constructs over time. Foundational Aspects of Family-School Partnership Research is an essential resource for researchers, professionals, and graduate students in child and school psychology, educational policy and politics, family studies, developmental psychology, sociology of education, sociology, and anthropology.

Against the Odds PDF
By:Janine Bempechat
Published on 1998-11-10 by Jossey-Bass

Bempechat's well-written book takes a fresh look at vital questions about the academic achievement of minority children. Her examination of academically successful children within several different ?at-risk' ethnic groups yields unconventional and original insights about how children are socialized for schooling. A valuable contribution to the literature on achievement and motivation in multiethnic nations! ?Herbert P. Ginsburg, Jacob H. Schiff Foundation professor of psychology and education, Teachers College, Columbia University From an original position that isolates the factors which predict academic performance, Harvard professor Janine Bempechat shatters the myths about success and failure among poor and minority students. With sound analysis and practical advice, Bempechat gives parents, educators?and anyone interested in the well-being of children?hope and inspiration as they strive for academic excellence in children. Focusing on the factors that contribute to academic success?rather than analyzing the conditions that lead to failure and underachievement?Bempechat's book is a unique contribution to the understanding of societal and cultural effects on learning. Against the Odds reveals that high-achieving children, no matter what their ethnic or cultural background, have similar perceptions about their parents' educational beliefs and practices. And, surprisingly, Bempechat's research counters the commonly held view that academic success is tied primarily to an individual's belief in effort. Written for teachers, psychologists, counselors, mentors?anyone interested in the welfare of children?Against the Odds is a guide to help create policy and curricula that will foster excellence and enable children?rich, middle-class, poor, minority, nonminority?to achieve their full potential.

Inclusive Special Education PDF

Published on 2014-08-20 by Springer

Much has been written about special education and about inclusive education, but there have been few attempts to pull these two concepts and approaches together. This book does just that: sets special education within the context of inclusive education. It posits that to include, effectively, all children with special educational needs in schools requires an integration of both concepts, approaches, and techniques. It has never been more timely to publish a book that helps professionals who work with schools, such as psychologists, special education professionals, and counselors, to identify effective practices for children with special needs and provide guidelines for implementing these in inclusive schools.

Based on the presentations and discussions from a national symposium on family-school links held at the Pennsylvania State University, this volume brings together psychologists, sociologists, educators, and policymakers studying the bidirectional effects between schools and families. This topic -- the links between families and schools, and how these affect children's educational achievement -- encompasses a host of questions, each of key social and educational significance. * How far does parental involvement in schools affect children's experiences and achievement at school? * What explains the great differences between schools, families, and communities in the extent of such involvement? * Are these differences a matter of school practices, or do they reflect much broader social and cultural divisions? * What is the nature of the impact schools have on children and their families? * How can family-school-partnerships be fostered in a way that helps children? The chapter authors consider these questions and related issues, present different perspectives, highlight various aspects of the issues, and suggest widely differing answers. This volume's goal is to provide the reader with current information on what is known about family-school-community links, and to provoke new ways of thinking about these links and their implications for children's education and well-being.

The Effects of Autism on the Family PDF Download

The Effects of Autism on the Family PDF
By:Eric Schopler,Gary B. Mesibov
Published on 2013-06-29 by Springer Science & Business Media

As the oldest statewide program serving autistic people in the United States, North Carolina's Division TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped CHildren) has had a major impact on ser vices for these people and their families. As we move into our second decade, we are frequently questioned about all aspects of our procedures, techniques, and program. Of all the questions that are asked, however, the one that comes up most frequently and seems to set our program apart from others concerns the ways in which we work with families. To help answer this question we identified what we have found to be the major components in our parent-professional relationships, and we elaborate on these with the most current research informa tion, clinical insights, and community knowledge available through the expertise of our distinguished contributors. Our purpose was to collect the most recent information and to organize the resulting volume along the outlines of the par ent-professional relationship found most important in the TEACCH program. Thus, the four main sections of the book include these four major ways profes sionals work with parents: as their advocates, their trainers, their trainees, and their reciprocal emotional support source. To the extent this effort was success ful, we acknowledge that it is easier to organize book chapters along these dimensions than it is to provide their implementation in the field.
